THE AFGHAN WHIGS -- I KEEP COMING BACK
This a band that resonated with me instantly, one of those records that I heard at the right place, right time and never it left me. Dulls voice on this is one of the best performances ever. Gets me every time. Coulda fixed those notes but left ‘em.
…AND YOU WILL KNOW THEM BY TRAIL OF DEAD -- RELATIVE WAYS
This band creates such massive, epic music, they been a huge influence on me. One of the most under rated bands ever. I thought this band was gonna change everything, blew me away from first listen. It seems crazy to me that this band didn’t take over the world
From the opening beat, to the vocal to the build-up, this was an instant modern classic. Extremely creative band that make amazing sounding records. Great live and a huge inspiration. Amazing. A constant listen.
BLACK FLAG -THIRSTY AND MISERABLE
From the “damaged’ album, the record that probably had the most effect on me when I was growing up. It was the first record where I felt I belonged to something. All the things i was feeling it was saying, this record probably either saved or made my life.
THE BRONX -- HEART ATTACK AMERICAN
One of the few newer punk rock bands that I actually buy into fully. This song was like a kick to the balls. Knocked me on my arse. Such raw power. Untouchable.
COMPANY FLOW -- 8 STEPS TO PERFECTION
An oldie, EL-P was one of the producers in this unit and he has been a constant source of inspiration for me. Always thinking in a different way to other hip hop producers. I listened to this nonstop when this came out.
DAVID BOWIE -- HEROES
This is one of the earliest songs i can remember, I used to listen to it constantly from around the age of 7. The lyrics and the delivery just used to floor me. When he starts singing at 3.16 I would lose it, I had never heard emotion like that before and this song was probably when I realized I wanted to be a musician, even at that young age.
THE DEARS -- LOST IN THE PLOT
A song I heard in a store and just had to know what it was, bought the album right there and then. Such a huge song and a great vocal.
DEERHUNTER -- HELICOPTER
Big fan of this band, great voice and inventive arrangements and sounds. Always exciting and unique.
DEFTONES – YOU’VE SEEN THE BUTCHER
One of the best, if not the best heavy band. Amazing. Chinos voice always gets me, so expressive and undeniable. Loved everything by them, never let me down.
DJ SHADOW -- HIGH NOON
The last word in sampling-old skool dj-b-boy-crate digging culture he just killed everybody. Such great taste, he created some all-time classic songs. When I first heard “endtroducing” i stopped playing guitar and bought ma sampler! I spent a long time figuring out how the fuck he did what he did, it was ridiculous -- I still don’t know how he did it!
FAILURE -- SERGEANT POLITENESS
This band- a huge influence on modern rock, I hear so much of this band’s sound everywhere, it’s crazy they never got the recognition the deserved. I sought out the singer, Ken Andrews to produce ‘weapons’ he has produced a lot of great music since this album. Super, super under rated.
METALLICA -- FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE
This song scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. I was just getting into heavy music, but this was just too much! Unrelenting, brutal, still sounds punishing today. They have never sounded as vital as they have on this song. Incredible, James Hetfield -- best guitarist in rock.
N.E.R.D. -- RUN TO THE SUN
I miss planet pharrell. About 10 years ago he was everywhere, just killing it, hip hop, pop music, left field, everywhere. Such soul and bounce in his songs, this is one of my fav NERD songs. I’m saying this lot but again, a massive influence.
NINE INCH NAILS -- ADRIFT AND AT PEACE
This is instrumental but Trent Reznor has one of the most recognizable voices in rock. Always loved this songs as it reminds me of the David Bowie/Eno instrumental tracks I grew up on. Such cool production in all nine inch nails material. A staple.
PHANTOGRAM -- TURN IT OFF
A newer band that just hits the spot for me, love the beats and the treatments in the production. A band that have had a lot of plays in the last 2 years or so. They got me back in love with electronic music after really getting sick of it.
PLAN B -- ILL MANORS
Everything. the content, the delivery, the amen break in the chorus, the production-the total package.
REFUSED -- THE SHAPE OF PUNK TO COME
Couldn’t think of a better title. When i first heard this 14 years ago, it just made me want to give up. A huge influence on me, and Lostprophets. Amazing musicianship and a solid message. This record gives me instant euphoria and extreme jealousy all at the same time.
VOIVOD -- NOTHINGFACE
A band i spent of time listening to when i was a kid. I knew of nobody else who dug them or even listened to them, so unique and light-years ahead of everybody else, some of the most inventive music i had heard at the time and for me still sounds great now.
