Kinky Dramas and Magic Stories – The KDMS (Review)

Rating:

The KDMS are made up of electro diva Kathy Diamond and producer Max Skiba. Their debut album ‘Kinky Dramas and Magic Stories’ is set for release on 30th April, including rare remixes by Alexis Taylor from Hot Chip and Metro Areas’s Morgan Geist.

It becomes crystal clear on first play why Gomma were so quick to sign KDMS, with this distinctive duo fore fronting the indie-disco-house movement, the album including a soulful vibe similar to the likes of Horse Meat Disco with tracks that combine both funk and electro, mashing up deep basslines and ridiculously addictive melodic rhythms.

A personal favourite on the album is a remix by New York dance icon Morgan Geist entitled ‘Tonight’, bringing the electro element of Diamond to the foreground of the album, in direct comparison to the alternative version of Wonderwoman by Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip, with hypnotic beats that highlight Diamond and Skiba’s journey into soulful disco.

With this album The KDMS truly break all genre boundaries, taking on a mix  of unusual underground electronic beats, whilst intertwining their trademark glamorous pop sound within each musical masterpiece. They are the future of disco, with the album revealing their inspiration concerning the likes of James Chance, Lil Louis, David Bowie, Quincy Jones and Chaka Khan.

Kinky Dramas & Magic Stories marks the duo’s journey into the depths of funk with synthesized disco elements that truly engage the listener through Diamond’s seductive lyrics.  In just three singles The KDMS have made their mark as one of the current leading DJ’s in the industry. With such household names as Soul Clap, Tim Sweeny, Tensnake and Hot Chip all avidly discussing this duo’s fresh diva driven disco-pop. They have even become a firm favourite of Annie Mac, with Kathy from The KDMS even being described as Disco’s answer to Adele.

It seems through the creation of Kinky Dramas and Magic Stories, The KDMS have paved the way for a new wave of modern electronic pop, combining such genres as funk and soul with their own distinctly glamorous sound. It’s well worth a listen, you’re in for a real treat.

Kinky Dramas and Magic Stories is released 30th April 2012 on Gomma
