Spooks – Series 10 – Episode 5

As we hurtle towards what appears to be a frenzied climax on this final season of Spooks, the writing just gets better and the action just gets more explosive. Kidnapping senior CIA officers? Check. Murder and intrigue? Check. Extradition? Yep, we’ve got it. I’m still not entirely sure how they are going to finish what I think has been one of the best series the BBC has televised in recent years, but after tonight’s episode, I’m definitely here for the ride.
This episode gives the spotlight firmly over to Harry, and shows just how far a spy will go when he is tipped over the edge. Bringing his newly assembled Section D team and newly Appointed civil servant Ruth along to play badass with the US, we discover that the plot to derail talks between Russia and the UK were set up by Jim Coaver, a deputy Director of the CIA. In order to get to the bottom of this, Section D execute a quick and somewhat genius plan to kidnap Coaver to get to the bottom of all this plotting and planning.
And where is Ruth in all this? Torn between her loyalty for Harry and her new Home Office role, Ruth ends up right back at the grid helping to clear up the aftermath of the kidnapping. Speedy chases aside, post kidnap it is not looking good for Harry, or the MI5 as a whole. Jim Coaver is thrown from a speeding van and killed by a group who we are led to believe are a band of mercenaries, (but who controls them?!) and Coaver it seems was not the one they were looking for after all. But with his final words alluding to some essential information on a laptop, there is little time to waste.
A brilliantly tense scene in the US Embassy follows, which again shows the spy brilliance of Ruth and the laptop is retrieved – but not for long. Stolen at gunpoint by Sasha, he finds out who his real Father is in a short, but moving scene.
And what of the Gavrik family? Could Elena and Ilya have been secretly running this gang of mercenaries is a haze of double-crossing and major bluffing? An assassination attempt on the Home Secretary, a bomb alert in Russia – it is all going wrong for both the talks and Harry Pearce. With Ilya revealing that he knew of Elena’s betrayal, Sasha losing the plot over his maternity and Harry Pearce on his way to the US, extradited for Jim Coaver’s death, who will be there to save the day when the suspect is revealed in the final episode?
One thing is for sure, it is unlikely to be a quiet finale.
