Weekend Events to consider (8th July)
Looking for something to do this weekend in London? Jo Golding has some ideas for you.
Lexi Cinema Presents The Nomad
The Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich
Unlike many other pop-up summer cinemas, these screenings throw theatre, music, costume and performance into the mix, immersing you in the full flavour of whatever film it is you’re watching. This weekend the cinema is based at The Old Royal Naval College and is showing Memento (Fri), Time Bandits (Sat) and Groundhog Day (Sun). Doors open at 6pm, film starts at 9.30pm
Olympic Test Event: Modern Pentathlon
Greenwich Park Saturday 9 – Sunday 10 July
Can you believe the Olympics are only a year away? We’re now officially in the ‘run-up’ to the games and so everything is being tested in preparation for the main event. This weekend is the turn of the modern pentathlon athletes at the test event for the UPIM World Cup Final. The event is made up from running, shooting, fencing, swimming and show jumping and winners will qualify for next year.
Cremorne Cardboard Canoe Competition
12.30pm, Cremorne Riverside, Saturday 9 July
Cardboard canoes racing each other. What more do you need to know? As the name suggests, they’re made of cardboard so they’re guaranteed to sink. The question is: how fast? If you’re in the area go along, point and laugh at the people capsizing into the freezing cold, grubby waters. It’ll be an instant joy bringer! Race starts at 3pm.
London Youth Dance
The Scoop, More London, Saturday 9 – Sunday 10 July
Over 40 of London’s Youth Dance companies will be performing their best work at The Scoop this weekend. They’ll be everything from street dance to ballet and contemporary. Perfect if you’re looking to pick up some new moves. Just don’t drunkenly try them out on unsuspecting potential suitors…
Weekend tip: if you find yourself anywhere near Leicester Square DO NOT go to M&M World. Four floors of tourists and memorabilia based on a sweet that only comes in 2 options? No thanks!
