Summer of Cinema
Summer is in full swing, which can only mean one thing to fellow cinema goers; blockbuster season is knocking them out thick and fast. We’ve already had lashings of comic book offerings such as X- Men and Thor, plus heaps of action packed thrillers including Hanna and Source Code, these are to name but a few of what’s left in store this summer.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 Release date 15 July
The eighth and final instalment goes out with a bang after ten years of entertaining the world over. Picking up where the first instalment left off, we follow childhood friends and Hogwart pupils Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) on their quest to battle and defeat Lord Voldermort (Ralph Fiennes) by destroying his remaining horcrux (a powerful object retaining a fragment of a Dark Wizard’s soul to all non fans). Whether you are a hard core Potter fan or someone who catches the odd film it’s worth watching one of the most successful franchises take its final bow.
The First Avenger: Captain America Release date 29 July
The all American superhero based on the Marvels Comics character is heading to cinemas at the end of this month. Starring Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, a young man turned away from enlisting in the U.S. Army, only to later volunteer for a project named ‘Rebirth’. The result of the secret experiment is a transformed super-human and patriotically suited crusader named Captain America.
Super 8 Release date 5 August
Hotly anticipated and causing many waves of Twitter hysteria is Star Treks J.J Abrams Super 8. Produced by Steven Spielberg the film follows a group of young friends in the summer of 1979 who witness a train crash in their small town of Ohio. Soon after are a series of strange and unexplainable events begin to grip the town in a mass panic. It’s up to the kids, Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, and Kyle Chandler to get the bottom of what the U.S Air force are trying to hide.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes Release date 12 August
Witness the beginning with this reboot of the classic that focuses on the origin and uprising of the ape. James Franco is the scientist who through trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s inadvertently increases the intelligence of his test subject. The subject in question Caesar, becomes human-like and aware of himself and his purpose, leading a revolt against those who have imprisoned his fellow apes and starting a war with mankind.
Cowboys & Aliens Release date 19 August
An intriguing looking mash-up of Western and Sci-Fi chock full with A-listers. It’s 1873 in the Arizona dessert, Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig) a wanted criminal stumbles into a small town with no memory and straight into the path of Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford). Spacecrafts from an unknown enemy begin attacking the town, the two men soon realising that they must put the law aside and work together to save the town and its people.
